1060.11 – Disappearing Toothpick Squares


You are out with your friends. One of them, for whatever reason, decides to arrange eighteen toothpicks to make six squares—seven if you count the big square. She then challenges the group to throw away two toothpicks, leaving sixteen in their original positions, so that only four squares remain, and no partial squares. Solve this problem so that you can prove to your friends that you are the best at throwing toothpicks away. Here is how your friend arranges her eighteen toothpicks:
