1090.25 – Bohemian Chain Mail


Medieval chain mail armor was usually made with the pattern seen below in Fig. 1. Each ring is connected to four others around it. One day, an armorer from Pilsen arrived at the castle of an English lord and told them that they were doing it all wrong.

“In Bohemia,” he said, “we don’t believe in linking the rings.” He held up the arrangement that can be seen in Fig. 2. “These three are connected but not linked.”

The lord was impressed. “You mean you can make an entire hauberk this way?” a hauberk being a tunic made of chain mail.

Give it a try. Cut out the rings provided and see if you can connect them using the pattern in Fig. 2.
