1180.35 – Flutists and Violinists

Two flutists and two violinists went out to buy some music supplies. On the way back to their studio, they added things up and discovered that the total amount spent was $90, and that each of them had spent exactly 1/3 of the total. How can this be?

Solution

Each person spent 1/3 of the $90; thus there must have been only three people. One of the flutists must also be a violinist.
