1180.81 – Horse Race

One sunny day, a Sonoran collared lizard was sitting on a rock in the middle of the desert. He was bored, since there was absolutely nothing to do, even though he had swept enough coins from wayfarers to fill his hoard and pay for any kind of entertainment. Thus, when he saw two voyagers riding by, he signaled them to approach.

"Friends," he said, holding out a shining Sol, "I would like you to race to that prickly pear over there in the distance, and I will give this golden coin to the one of you whose horse comes in last."

"Whose horse comes in last?!" exclaimed the voyagers, who both had on their Universal Communicators, switched to desert-creature mode.

"Exactly so. I realize that this is an unusual condition, but that is what I said. Now start."

Desirous of money, the two voyagers started toward the distant cactus, but since each of them was trying to hold his horse back, they made very little progress. When they were almost ready to give up the race, a Sonoran desert toad appeared unexpectedly in front of them, and jumping off their horses, they prostrated themselves before him in the hot desert sand.

"What is the trouble, my sons?" asked the toad in a low voice, and they explained to him the conditions of the race.

"Ah, you are in a tricky situation," said the toad. "But here's what you can do." And he whispered his advice to them.

"Bless you!" exclaimed the voyagers, jumping into their saddles and putting their spurs to the horses' sides.

They galloped to the cactus faster than the wind. The race was decided in a few minutes, and the lizard had to pay the Sol to the winner, the one whose horse came in last. What did the toad say?
